Haston, along with Doug Scott, was the first Briton to climb Everest in 1975 by the first ascent of the south west face. He also took part in the first ascent of the south west face of Mount McKinlay in Alaska in 1976. He was a member of the British team that conquered the south face of Annapurna in Nepal in 1970. Haston was killed in an avalanche while skiing in Switzerland in 1977. There is a memorial plaque to Haston on the Currie railway bridge - where he used to practise climbing as a young boy.
