Irvine was a brilliant attacking full-back and was one of the most gifted players ever seen in Scottish rugby. In 1980, he scored two tries in the last ten minutes against France at Murrayfield. The French newspaper, L'Equipe, was so impressed by his performance that they renamed the stadium, 'Irvinefield'. From 1972 until 1982, he played 51 times for Scotland and captained his country on 15 occasions. He played nine times for the British Lions during the tours of 1974, 1977 and 1980.
