In 1935, Lynch defeated Jackie Brown to win the National Boxing Association / International Boxing Union version of the world flyweight title. He was confirmed as the best flyweight boxer in the world in 1937 when he unified the title, beating Small Montana in London. Lynch began his career boxing in carnival booths. In 1931, aged 18, he turned professional and lost only two fights between 1932 and 1936.
