Macpherson was the captain of the first Scottish rugby team to win the Grand Slam - in 1925. The victory came after Scotland defeated France 25 - 4 in Edinburgh, Wales 24 - 14 in Swansea and Ireland 14 - 8 in Dublin. The final match was played against England on 21 March 1925 in the newly opened Murrayfield Stadium. The Scots won 14 - 11 and made history. 'GPS' played for Oxford University along with his fellow team members in the Scottish three-quarter line - Ian Smith, George Aitken and Johnny Wallace. He later played for Edinburgh Academicals.
