'Old' Tom Morris
(1821-1908)
Golf
Inducted in 2003
Old Tom Morris is one of golf's founding fathers. He won the second Open Championship to be staged, in 1861. And he's the tournament's oldest winner too - he was aged 46 years and 99 days when he won his fourth and final Open in 1867. He was fiercely competitive and blessed with a slow, smooth swing, his only flaw being a curious difficulty with short putts. He also had a hand in the design of 75 courses, including Prestwick, Royal Dornoch, Muirfield and Carnoustie.
- Open winner, 1861, 1862, 1864, 1867
- Greenkeeper at St Andrews, 1865-1904
- Made golf balls and golf clubs; owned a shop, which still exists in St Andrews today
