'Young' Tom Morris

The son of 'Old Tom Morris', 'Young' Tom Morris grew up surrounded by golf. He was competing as a professional by the time he was thirteen! Morris won The Open in 1868, 1869 and 1870, keeping the Championship belt. The golfing authorities cancelled the 1871 tournament in an attempt to end his run. They decided to rotate the following tournaments yearly between three courses, awarding a Claret Jug as the new prize. The change of venue did not affect Morris, he continued his monopoly of the tournament by winning again in 1872. Morris's life was tragically short. When his young wife died in childbirth in September 1875, he never recovered from the shock and he himself died on Christmas Day of the same year.
